Where and When is Make Trouble Held?
Make Trouble is a five-week program held in Wilmingon, North Carolina.
Who Can Participate in Make Trouble?
The program is open to current and recently graduated university students.
What Is the Application Process?
The application form is online and you will respond to questions pertinent to your past and present experience as well as your future goals. You also have the opportunity to submit your current resume, links to pertinent social media, and/or videos that will aid in giving us a sense of how you present yourself to an audience. Don’t worry! All levels of experience are considered. Candidates for acceptance will be interviewed and should consider the first interview just that - an interview, not an audition. Our emphasis is on process. Notifications and offers will be sent throughout February, March and April. Once applicants are accepted to the ensemble, a second Skype session will be scheduled in April so roles can be cast. What Does It Cost to Apply to Make Trouble?
The application is free of cost. We just ask that you take time and care in preparing your submission.
What Is the Application Deadline?
Our objective is to have the ensemble cast no later than March 26, 2019. However, we will take applications after March 26th to allow for alternates in case plans change for accepted members and slot(s) become available prior to commencement of the program. Please note applications will be reviewed as they are submitted so the earlier you submit, the better. All applicants will be contacted for follow up interviews with offers to those accepted to participate in Make Trouble during the months of February, March and April.
If Accepted, What Does Make Trouble Cost and When Are Payments Due?
Tuition: Tuition to the program is $2,100 and includes a $150 non-refundable registration fee. The $150 registration fee is due within ten days of acceptance to the program. Please note accepted participants are not guaranteed a spot until the registration fee has been received. The first half of tuition, $900 (assumes registration fee has been received), is due no later than April 15th, with a second payment of $1,050 due no later than May 15th. You are welcome and encouraged to pay prior to these benchmark dates.
Housing: Housing is available on campus through UNCW. The cost will be $962 per participant and information on how to secure housing directly with UNCW will be included in your registration packet upon acceptance to the program. In addition, UNCW requires those residing on campus acquire a student ID which is an additional $25 expense. Although participants are encouraged to stay on campus, it is not a requirement of Make Trouble.
What Is Our Refund Policy?
We understand that sometimes things happen, and plans need to change. Should you choose to withdraw from the program on or prior to April 15th, your tuition will be refunded less the $150 registration fee. Should you need to withdraw from the program after April 15th but on or before May 15th, you will receive a 50% refund of tuition fees ($2,100 - $150 non-refundable registration fee = $900). Should you need to withdraw from the program on or after May 16th, no refunds will be given. Please understand that due to the nature of this small ensemble program, we will likely not be able to fill your spot if you withdraw after May 15th as it gives us just a few short weeks to find a paying participant. Please note this refund policy applies only to your tuition, not your housing arrangements. Should you choose housing on the UNCW campus or elsewhere, their refund policies will apply.
What If I Need Financial Assistance to Help Pay for Make Trouble?
Many colleges and universities have resources for students who wish to participate in programs like Make Trouble. We suggest you check with your department to see what might be available to you.
I’ve Participated in Make Trouble Previously. May I Receive a Discount if I Enroll for the Current Session?
Yes, you can! Returning students receive a 10% discount off of their tuition (discount does not apply to room and board).
What Will You Perform if Accepted into the Program?
This year we will be working with A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Timon of Athens.
As referenced in What Is The Application Process above, we will hold virtual casting auditions in April and inform you of your roles prior to your arrival. You will need to be off-book by day 1. This way the text will be in you and you'll be ready to work physically and intuitively. We will also do a "Trouble Run" on that first day.
What’s a Trouble Run?
We believe that to really get the play(s) in you, we need to work without scripts. We believe in the pressure of time and want to maximize every second with you. So you need to come in on the first day with all your lines memorized. You will work together as an ensemble, without directors, to stage the play off-book. It is scary and fun and lets us dig into rehearsal with the plays already in your body. Not to mention it helps you to become an ensemble quickly - relying on each other to tell a story is a HUGE component of our program. Don’t worry, we’ll direct you after that. But first we want to see what choices you make together.
When Are the Performances? We will be performing at select venues between July 10th and the 20th including a sensory-friendly Seahawk Family Arts Matinee performance and at least four performances as part of the Lumina Festival of the Arts held on the UNCW campus.
What Does a Day of Make Trouble Look Like?
Most days we will work from 10am to 10pm and it will look something like this:
10:00 – 11:00 am: Ensemble Workshop
11:00 - 12:30 pm: Physical Training
12:30 - 1:30 pm: Lunch Break
1:30 - 6:00 pm: Ensemble Theater Making, Compositions, Scene Rehearsals
6:00 - 7:00 pm: Dinner Break
7:00 - 10:00 pm: Rehearsals and Showings
